Decertification Evaluations

Decertification evaluations entail careful consideration of a juvenile’s background and conduct to assist Courts in determining whether a return to the juvenile justice system is appropriate for those charged with serious criminal offenses. These evaluations require an understanding of the applicable legal criteria and an appreciation for the family system responsible for the juvenile’s nurturing.

Balancing Justice and Maturity

The primary consideration in decertification evaluations is whether a juvenile accused of a serious crime can be rehabilitated within the juvenile justice system rather than placed in the adult correctional system. Addressing this significant and complex issue necessitates a comprehensive examination of the individual’s family dynamics, educational background, peer influences, and level of maturity.

Each evaluation process involves:

Detailed Developmental History Review

Dr. Erickson methodically reviews records to gain a comprehensive understanding of the juvenile’s history, including his or her experience within the family unit.

Comprehensive Psychological Examination

A thorough psychological examination is performed to identify the presence of any mental disorders, determine the individual’s strengths, and assess the potential for rehabilitation.

Interview with Family Members

Understanding the family unit is vital to providing a complete picture of what factors might have contributed to a juvenile’s conduct and what support may be available in the future.

A Commitment to Compassion and Fairness

Dr. Erickson is steadfast in providing unbiased evaluations that appreciate the challenging circumstances that juveniles often encounter while appreciating the need for public safety and justice. His past work as a Law Guardian, where he represented abused children in Court, impressed upon him the need for effective and compassionate solutions for vulnerable members of society.
